정명석 목사 성폭행 혐의 관련보도 '무죄(無罪)추정' 논리가 우선”

“한국 언론들, JMS 정명석 목사의 성폭행 혐의 사건을 보도하는 과정에서 어떤 점이 실수 혹은 왜곡보도였는지 드러나...”

필자는 본지(브레이크뉴스) 5월1일자 “JMS(기독교복음선교회) 정명석 목사(78세) “성폭행!..피해여성 1만명 명단 공개하면 믿겠다!” 제목의 기사에서 “언론은 정명석 목사 관련 성폭행 사건의 보도에서 더 차분해져야 한다!”고 주장 한 바 있다.

필자는 이 글을 통해 “지난 3월 한 매체는 JMS를 반대하는 단체의 활동가인 A씨(교수)와의 인터뷰 내용을 기사화했다. 이 기사는 'JMS(정명석)가 여성 1만명과 성관계...목표를 초과 달성했다'라는 내용을 기사화 했다. 정명석 목사가 설교 때 '성적구원=하늘애인 1만명 만들기가 목표라는 말을 했다'면서 'JMS(정명석)가 여성 1만명과 성관계...목표를 초과 달성했다'는 내용이었다. '1만명과 성폭행'에 대해, 그 근거를 대지 않고, 정명석 목사가 설교 때 주장했다는 설교 중의 말을, 이에 대입(代入)시키고 있다”면서 “정명석 목사가 기독교의 경전인 성경을 해석하는 과정에서 '하늘애인 1만명'을 언급 했는데, 이를 '성폭행'으로 번역한 듯하다. 일반적으로 외서(外書)를 번역할 때는 오역(誤譯)이 있을 수 있다. 정명석 목사가 1만명 성폭행을 초과 달성했다는 주장은 정명석 목사의 설교를 이해하는 과정에서 오역적(誤譯的)인 범주에 드는 내용으로 보인다”고 주장 한바 있다.

이 사건(정명석 목사 성폭행 사건)의 재판 과정에서 필자의 주장이 사실로 드러나고 있어, 한국 언론들이 이 보도에 관한한 좀 더 신중한 보도자세를 견지해야 한다는 게 현실이다.

기독교복음선교회측은 6월 29일자 보도자료에서 언론의 왜곡보도 실상을 사회에 알렸다. 이 자료는 “지난 3월 3일에 방영이 시작된 넷플릭스 다큐멘터리 ‘나는 신이다’가 사회적으로 큰 파장을 일으킨 가운데 후폭풍이 거세게 불고 있다. 특히 JMS 편은 포르노 수준의 선정성으로 도마 위에 올랐고 녹취 파일 편집·조작 의혹까지 불거진 상태다. 여기에 실제 인물이 아닌 대역배우를 쓰고도 자막에 성 피해자로 허위로 표시하거나 사실과 다른 허위 사실을 다뤄 다큐멘터리로서 신뢰성에 금이 가면서 논란이 되고 있다. 일례로 최근에는 ‘나는 신이다’ JMS 정명석 편에 출연한 성 피해자가 대역 배우였다는 사실이 퍼블릭뉴스를 통해 보도된 이후로 논란이 증폭되고 있다.”고 전제(前提)했다. 이어 “기독교복음선교회(세칭 JMS, 이하 선교회) 정명석 목사(78)에 대해 성폭행 혐의로 1심 재판이 진행되고 있는 가운데 이 재판의 핵심증거인 녹취파일 편집·조작 의혹이 불거졌다. ‘나는 신이다’에서 고소인 B씨가 제공한 녹취파일에 대해 전체 맥락에 맞지 않게 음성과 효과음을 짜깁기하고, 음성과 맞지 않는 자막을 삽입하는 등 편집·조작한 의혹이 제기된 가운데 이를 뒷받침 해주는 새로운 사실이 밝혀졌다.”고 알렸다.

기독교복음선교회측은 “핵심 쟁점이 되고 있는 녹취파일의 증거 능력 및 조작 여부가 초미의 관심사인 가운데, 녹취파일 수집과정에 대한 수사보고서가 실수로 잘못 기재됐다는 경찰 수사관의 자백이 나왔다. 정명석 목사 측 변호인단 중 한 명은 지난 5월 16일 제9차 공판에 검찰 측 증인으로 출석한 A경위는 고소인이 아이클라우드에서 다운받은 녹음파일을 증거로 제출한 것이 아니라고 증언했다고 밝혔다. 또한 수사관이 압수조서에 '고소인의 아이클라우드 계정에 접속하여 해당 녹취파일이 있음을 확인했다”고 기재한 내용은 수사관의 착각이었다고 증언했다. 즉, 녹취파일을 아이클라우드에서 확인한 사실이 없었다는 것'이라고 설명하면서 '고소인이 피해 상황을 녹음했다는 녹취파일은 고소인 측의 유일한 물적 증거로 고소인 B씨는 이 파일이 아이클라우드에 자동 전송되도록 동기화되어 있다'고 진술했다. 고소인 B씨가 녹음한 휴대폰을 팔아버려 원본으로 간주되던 아이클라우드 파일에 대해 검찰은 '수사관의 실수로 아이클라우드에 보관 중이던 B씨의 녹음파일이 삭제됐다', '보관 중인 증거 CD가 손상돼서 복구했다'고 하는 등 석연치 않은 모습을 보였다. 이에 이번 수사관의 증언으로 부실한 증거물 관리에 대한 지적과, 과연 실수로 녹음파일이 삭제된 것인지에 대한 의혹이 제기되고 있다“고 강조했다.

한국 언론들이 JMS(기독교복음선교회) 정명석 목사의 성폭행 혐의 사건을 보도하는 과정에서 어떤 점이 실수 혹은 왜곡보도였는지가 드러났다.

넷플릭스 ‘나는 신이다: 신이 배신한 사람들’ JMS편에서 “정명석이 징역 10년을 복역하는 동안 교도소에서 비키니 옷차림의 여신도 사진을 받아보고, 그중에서 예쁜 여자를 골라서 면회를 오게 만든다”는 내용을 방영했다. 하지만 이런 내용도 전혀 사실이 아닌 것으로 밝혀졌다. 이와 관련, 기독교복음선교회는 서울중앙지방법원에 ‘2019가합567565 사건’과 관련해 2020년 6월 22일자로 서울구치소에 ‘여성 신도들이 나체 사진이나 수영복 사진 등을 수용자인 정명석 총재에게 보낸 사실이 있는지, 교정당국에서 이런 나체 사진 등 서신 수발이 가능한지 여부’를 묻는 사실조회 신청을 했다. 교정당국은 이 신청에 대한 답변을 선교회측에 보내왔다. 지난 2020년 7월 경 ‘서신으로 들어오는 선정적인 사진은 모두 반송함을 원칙으로 한다’는 회신을 보내온 것. 즉, 비키니 차림의 선정적인 사진은 애초에 정명석 목사에게 전달될 수 없을 뿐더러, 선교회 측에서는 그런 사진을 정명석 목사에게 보낸 적도 없다는 것이었다. 그런데도 다큐를 표방한 넷플릭스는 ‘나는 신이다’에서 사실이 아닌 제보자의 일방적인 허위주장을 실제 사실인 것처럼 제작해 방영했다. 이런 내용은 현재 성폭행 혐의로 1심 재판을 받고 있는 정명석 목사가 공정한 재판을 받는데 악영향을 끼치고 있는 것으로 알려졌다.

JMS측은 “‘나는 신이다’는 다큐멘터리로서 제작 단계에서 신뢰도를 스스로 무너뜨리는 내용을 담는 어리석음을 범했다”고 비판했다.

JMS(기독교복음선교회) 정명석 목사의 성폭행 혐의 사건의 보도와 관련, 한국 언론의 또 다른  문제가 노출됐다. ‘나는 신이다’ 프로의 JMS 편에 많은 시간을 할애해 등장하는 JMS 반대세력(안티 세력) 핵심은 A교수. 그는 넷플릭스 ‘나는 신이다’라는 프로에 자주 등장하는 인물. 그는 A방송에도 정명석 목사를 비판-비난하는 내용을 제보한 것으로 알려져 있다. A방송은 A씨-교수의 논리와 주장을 그대로 반영, 보도함으로써 언론중재위로부터 편향보도라는 판결을 받게 했다.

A방송의 뉴스룸은 지난해 7월 11일부터 22일까지 ‘정명석 목사 여신도 성폭력 의혹’에 대해 8차례에 걸쳐 연속 보도를 한 바 있다. 이에 선교회측은 A방송을 상대로 정정보도 및 반론보도를 청구하는 조정신청서를 언론중재위원회에 제출했다. 언론중재위원회는 A방송사측에 “[단독]정명석 육성파일, 13년 전 성폭행 판결문과 ‘판박이’” 등 8건의 보도에 대해 선교회 입장의 반론보도를 게재해야 한다고 결정을 내렸다. 이에 따라 A방송사측은 조정대상 보도 8건의 하단에 선교회의 반론보도문을 게재하고 주요 포털에도 전송했다고 한다. 하지만 A방송의 연속보도 이후 정명석 목사는 언론의 뭇매를 맞았다. 반론보도가 이어진 사실은 널리 알려지지 않았다. 이로 인해 정 목사는 여론 재판을 받는 불리한 상황에 처해 있는 것으로 전해졌다.

A방송사는 ‘정명석 목사 여신도 성폭력 의혹’ 사건에 관한 반론보도문을 게재했다. 이처럼 ‘정명석 목사 여신도 성폭력 의혹’ 사건의 진실은, 사실과 멀어도 너무 먼 거리였다는 게 밝혀지고 있다. 언론의 보도대로라면? 정명석 목사에게 성폭행을 당한 여성의 숫자가 “1만 명을 초과달성했다”라고 한다면? “성폭행 피해여성의 수가 1만 명을 넘어섰다”는 수치이다. 정명석 목사가 여성 1만여 명을 성폭행했다는 식으로 보도되고 알려졌으나, 지금까지 단 한 명의 피해자 신원도 확실하게 드러나지 않은 상황이다. 너무 과장된-‘뻥튀기 보도’였음이 드러났다.

필자는 “정명석 목사에게 성폭행을 당한 피해여성 1만 명의 명단(리스트)이 나온다면, 그때 그가 성(性) 폭행범임을 믿을 수 있겠다. 그때까진, 무죄추정의 원칙에 의해, 정명석 목사의 성폭행 범죄는 ‘무죄(無罪)추정’ 논리가 우선”이라고 주장한 바 있다.
